Different equipment, different risks
A scissor lift is not a forklift, and forklift training does not make someone competent to operate a MEWP. Warehouses, factories and maintenance teams may need both categories covered because the work changes from moving loads to working at height.
Operators need to understand the equipment, the working area, ground conditions, overhead hazards, access control and emergency arrangements.
When to ask about MEWP training
- Maintenance teams use platforms for lighting, racking or building work.
- Operators work near pedestrian routes, doorways or vehicle movements.
- The same team handles loads and later works at height.
- Equipment or site conditions have changed since previous training.
Plan the full picture
If your South Yorkshire site uses forklifts, scissor lifts and manual handling tasks, it is worth planning training as a wider safety programme. That helps operators understand the boundaries of each machine and the duties that come with it.
